Chadwick’s of Boston is a leading mail order catalog featuring a wide selection of high-quality, brand name merchandise of ready-to-wear women’s apparel.
The Challenge
Chadwick’s of Boston was in the process of expanding its operations by constructing a new distribution facility in Taunton, Massachusetts. This new facility would house all related packaging and shipping functions for their direct mail order operations.
A key element of the new distribution center’s specifications was the deployment of a high-speed tilt-tray Packing Sorter. The Packing Sorter design was configured to accommodate a seamless "one-pass" picking wave on one shift, while allowing multiwave packing on a separate shift.
The Mantissa Solution
Chadwick’s selected a Mantissa Twin Tray Scorpion® sortation system to fulfill their requirements. The system design incorporated 750’-0” of bi-planar sorter which included 140 sort locations for packing and 76 sort locations for seamless one pass picking. The system’s capacity was 10,800 trays per hour.
Mantissa’s efficient implementation of the Packing Sortation System provided the opportunity for Chadwick’s to “go live” within six months after contract.
Mantissa’s Sortation Control System (Destination and MerlinPLUS) proved to be robust and flexible enough for Chadwick’s to completely remove their existing warehouse management system and replace it with another warehouse management system during “live” operations.
The integration of the Mantissa tilt-tray sorter solution into the Chadwick’s operation has allowed Chadwick’s to achieve all of their operations goals, with a minimum of disruption. Mantissa’s online diagnostics allows seamless solutions to any issues related to the warehouse management system and day-to- day operation of the packing sortation process.
